Summary
Proposed Daycare Outdoor Play Area Development, Mississauga
Site Location:
The project is located in the City of Mississauga, within an urban childcare facility requiring a safe, durable, and climate-resilient outdoor play environment.
Proposed Development:
This project involves the design and construction of a fully engineered outdoor play area for a daycare facility, tailored to withstand Ontario’s extreme weather conditions while ensuring maximum safety and usability for children.
The development integrates specialized safety surfacing, structured play zones, and a high-performance subsurface drainage system. The design prioritizes year-round functionality, preventing water accumulation, ice formation, and long-term surface degradation.
The site is carefully programmed to accommodate multiple age groups, incorporating play structures, sensory zones, and secure boundaries within a cohesive and efficient layout.
Services Provided by N & N Engineers LTD:
N & N Engineers LTD provided fully integrated civil engineering and architectural/landscape design services to ensure performance, safety, and compliance with applicable standards.
Functional Servicing & Drainage Strategy:
Design and implementation of a high-efficiency subsurface stormwater drainage system to rapidly capture and convey runoff, preventing ponding and hazardous surface conditions.
Stormwater Management System:
A specialized subsurface drainage network was developed using perforated 100mm PVC pipes embedded within a clear stone reservoir layer. This system enables rapid infiltration and controlled discharge to the municipal system.
The design ensures continuous performance during heavy rainfall and freeze-thaw cycles, maintaining safe surface conditions throughout the year.
Site Servicing & Subsurface Design:
Multi-layered subsurface construction designed for durability and long-term performance, including:
-
300mm clear stone layer for subsurface detention and drainage
-
50mm granular base for surface stability
-
Terrafix 270R filter fabric to prevent soil migration and maintain system integrity
Clean-out access points are incorporated to facilitate long-term maintenance and operational efficiency.
Grading Plan:
Precision grading strategy developed to ensure proper surface drainage, eliminate low points, and provide safe, accessible slopes across the play area.
Erosion Control Plan:
Implementation of erosion and sediment control measures during construction to protect surrounding areas and maintain environmental compliance.
Architectural & Landscape Design:
Comprehensive outdoor site planning focused on creating a safe, engaging, and development-oriented play environment.
The design includes:
-
Zoning of play areas for different age groups
-
Integration of climbing structures, slides, and sensory play features
-
Barrier-free accessibility design
-
Secure perimeter treatments and retaining elements
Safety Surfacing Design:
Specification and integration of high-performance rubber safety surfacing, designed to meet fall-height protection standards while maintaining permeability and compatibility with the drainage system.
Purpose and Impact:
The integrated design approach ensures that the daycare outdoor facility meets the highest standards of safety, durability, and environmental performance.
By combining civil engineering and architectural design, N & N Engineers LTD delivers a resilient outdoor environment that minimizes maintenance requirements, enhances usability in all seasons, and provides a safe and engaging space for children.
This project demonstrates a holistic approach to site design, where technical infrastructure and user experience are seamlessly aligned.
